Technological progress and AI will allow us to create more value with less human time. But they do not determine what we do with this new productivity. AI is neither doom nor salvation. It is a multiplier of human capabilities and of the possibilities available to the society that uses it.

If we can turn part of technological progress into time, freedom and lower material demands in everyday life, the outcome of AI does not have to be a world in which people work even faster. It can be a world in which we need to work less, travel less out of necessity, waste less and still live better.

The purpose of automation is therefore not to make people do ever more work. Its purpose is to remove work that people no longer need to do.
